For the past six years, the National Center on Elder Abuse, or NCEA, has recognized a World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to draw attention to the difficult issue of elder neglect and abuse. The seventh annual awareness day is scheduled for June 15, 2012, with events planned all over the country.<\/p>\n

The day before, on June 14th, the White House will hold a conference to discuss issues associated with\u00a0elder abuse<\/a>, neglect and exploitation. The symposium will address the prevention of elder abuse and will be broadcast live from the White House’s website.<\/p>\n

The NCEA identifies several types of elder abuse, including neglect, financial exploitation, psychological abuse and physical abuse.<\/p>\n

According to the NCEA, the best estimates show, “between 1 and 2 million Americans age 65 or older have been injured, exploited or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depend for care or protection.”<\/p>\n

Research suggests that most incidents of elder abuse are never reported. According to the Illinois Department on Aging, the incidents that are reported consist of the following:<\/p>\n
