For many Chicago residents, this Sunday will be devoted entirely to watching the Super Bowl and related coverage. Regardless of whether you watch it at a bar with friends or at a home party, chances are good that alcohol will be served.
Even if you’re not drinking, it’s important to keep in mind that traveling this weekend will be dangerous. Like New Year’s Eve and Labor Day Weekend, Super Bowl weekend is associated with a spike in the number of alcohol-related car accidents and fatalities.
To combat the anticipated rise in drunk driving, law enforcement agencies in Chicago and around the state will be stepping up enforcement this weekend with extra officers out on patrol.
In a recent press release, the chief of the Darien Police warned that “This weekend can be a deadly and dangerous time because of drunk driving.” He added: “We are reminding everyone that if you choose to drink and drive in Darien this weekend, you will lose. If you plan on drinking alcohol while cheering on your team, pass your keys to a sober driver before the Super Bowl party begins.”
Of course, designated drivers face dangerous roads this weekend as well. The safest policy would be to avoid driving during the evenings this weekend if possible. However, if you need to drive, please make sure you buckle up. Law enforcement agencies say that this is one of your best defenses against drunk drivers.
It’s unfortunate that Super Bowl weekend is associated with higher rates of drunk driving, but it is a reality we all must face. However, the good news is that with a little planning and common sense, you can enjoy the game and still make sure everyone gets home safely.
